There are dozens of species of cockroaches in North America, which means that your home is vulnerable to invasion from all types of these nasty pests. And if you see one cockroach in your home, chances are good that you will have dozens or more of them because they like to live in large groups, and they reproduce rapidly. You will need a good Gilbert pest control plan, and you will need to put it in place quickly to get the problem under control.
Sometimes, cockroaches get into your home by chance, such as by hitching a ride on your firewood or even your groceries. But knowing what can bring cockroaches into your home and can keep them there can help you take preventive measures to reduce your risk of a cockroach infestation. Here are a few things that can make your home inviting for cockroaches:
Cockroaches and other pests in Tempe are attracted to your home because they have found a food source in it. You may think that you aren’t leaving out anything for them to eat, but even the smallest crumbs can be a smorgasbord for cockroaches. Keep your counters clear of food and crumbs, and wash all the dirty dishes in your sink every night (if not more frequently).
Check out your food storage, as well, and make sure that everything is in airtight containers. Roaches will gladly crawl into your flour bags, and more.
Roaches don’t distinguish between your food and your pet’s food. It’s all edible to them! If you have bags of pet food, make sure you close them tightly. It’s best to transfer the food to an airtight storage container to reduce the risk that roaches can get inside.
Also be mindful of where you are leaving the food for your pet. If food is sitting in the bowl for a long time, it can attract roaches. Only feed your pet at specific times, and only feed what they will eat in that sitting.
Your garbage can also be a great source of food and water for roaches. You can minimize the risk around your trash can by using plastic bags inside the bin to keep crumbs and other debris from spilling into the can itself, and then washing the can regularly. If you can, take the trash out of your house each night. That may mean using a smaller bin.
Also use a sealed bin anywhere you keep trash in the home. That means using bins that have lids that close tightly.
Next to food, water is one of the most important things that cockroaches and other pests need to survive – just like you. You can remove sources of water by making sure that all the caulking around your sinks, tubs, toilets, and other water sources are tight. You can also have your home inspected for any leaking pipes, and then make the needed repairs.
Hang up wet towels, keep kitchen sponges dry, and clean up any spills quickly. If you have areas that are humid in your home, run a dehumidifier.
Your house is enough shelter for all types of pests, so you might be thinking that there’s not much you can do about that. But you can take care around areas that your pest control technician can tell you are most attractive to cockroaches, and you can take measures to keep roaches from getting inside.
For example, you can caulk and close any gaps and cracks around your home, specifically around vents and other openings. You can remove clutter inside that will provide spaces for roaches to hide, and you can take out cardboard that will attract roaches.
Cockroaches can also be brought closer to your home by brush. Even if they are in the brush, they can eventually come into your home when they are so close. It is best to clear out anything that may attract them to reduce your risk.
Keep leaf litter and other debris away from your home. Move bark mulch away from your home, or thin it out so that it doesn’t create a build up of material or water. Water only your plants with what they need so that no extra sticks around to attract pests. If you compost, move the bin far from your home – it is a buffet for pests.
A comprehensive Chandler pest control plan has to also include taking preventive measures. A good pest control technician can eradicate any cockroaches or other pests that are present in your home, but taking these and other measures will reduce the risk that cockroaches will take up residence in your home in the first place. These measures will also make your home less vulnerable to other pests.
